We drove down the California coast today from San Jose to Santa Maria. It looked something like this:

Mussels on the beach -- I had to convince Nat that we couldn't eat these by reminding him that we had no way to cook them...

most of the coast looked a bit like this...

But after lunch we caught a cloudy patch, and it looked like this for a little while.

but the sun came out again, and then we saw...

...elephant seals! It must be their mating season or something, because we saw three separate colonies, and they were making totally outrageous noises. like jackhammers, if you'll believe it.

and to round it off, some clouds that we just happened to really like. Tomorrow, the drive to Phoenix.
